HT, AT, or MT tyres - TOYO has you covered!

What are the best off-road tyres for your 4WD?
Your vehicle's performance will be affected by the type of tyres you choose for your 4WD. Depending on the intended use of your 4WD, you may choose between three tyre categories: Highway-terrain (HT), All-terrain (AT) and Mud-terrain (MT).
Each tyre category has its own particular features and characteristics, which are typically related to the type of terrain you will be driving on.
How to choose the right tyre for your 4WD?
You may use your 4WD in different settings. To find the ideal tyre for your 4WD and driving needs, it is crucial to consider the type of driving you intend to do.
In this article, we’ll cover HT, AT, and MT tyres. You will learn, for example, why All-terrain tyres are not a ‘one-size-fits-all’ for all terrain types, why Highway-terrain tyres are better on-road than off-road, and why you shouldn’t consider Mud-terrain tyres to drive to work every day.
Highway-Terrain tyres
If you intend to get your 4WD more on-road than off-road, then HT tyres are the best choice for your driving needs. This is because this type of tyre is meant to be driven predominantly on sealed roads.
Features
- High-speed rating
- Low load index
- Good handling capabilities on wet bitumen
- Good tread wear
Benefits
- Provide smooth driving
- Deliver a quiet and comfortable drive
- Give predictable, balanced handling
At Tony's Tyre and Autocare, we provide a new generation of 4WD tyres for drivers of 4x4s, SUVs, and utes. We supply and fit a great range of highway-terrain tyres from leading brands, including Toyo, Continental, and Cooper.
Here is an example of one of the many HT tyres that we have on offer:
Toyo Open Country U/T

Regular utes, 4x4s, and SUVs can benefit from the safety, performance, and value that the all-new Open Country U/T Toyo Tyres offer.
The Open Country U/T replaces the Open Country H/T by significantly improving wet traction, fuel efficiency, and comfort without sacrificing the impressive mileage of the earlier model.
AT tyres
All-Terrain tyres are versatile types of tyres that can be used in different road conditions, on both on-road and off-road terrain. They provide a balance between sealed and rocky surfaces.
When compared with HT tyres, AT tyres have a more aggressive and deeper tread, which provides additional grip for off-road driving.
Features
- Moderate speed rating
- Moderate load index
- Thick and strong sidewalls
- Deep and aggressive tread
Benefits
- Provide greater durability than an HT tyre
- Offer increased off-road grip
- Suit a range of surfaces, including sealed roads and rocky off-road tracks
- Generally, provide good on-road comfort
Tony's Tyre and Autocare provides a new generation of all-terrain, 4WD tyres for drivers of 4x4s, SUVs and utes looking for superior on- and off-road performance.
Here are some examples of AT tyres we have in stock:
Toyo Open Country A/T II

The Open Country A/T II offers increased tread life, excellent traction throughout the life of the tyre and an aggressive tread appearance.
In Australia, we offer the Toyo Open Country A/T II 4x4 tyre in a range of tyre sizes and premium performance with cost-effective technology.
Toyo Open Country A/T III

The Open Country A/T III delivers gripping off-road traction with responsive and predictable on-road handling. With a strong focus on wet performance, durability, and treadwear life, Toyo introduces advances in tread design, construction, and all-new tread compounding.
It also provides a quiet ride with exceptional stability. The Open Country A/T III is built to get there and get back home, regardless of terrain or weather. Available at Tony's Tyre and Autocare in LT-Metric, P/Euro-Metric and Flotation sizes.
MT tyres
Mud terrain tyres have more aggressive treads when compared to AT or HT tyres. MT tyre treads are designed to resist the most challenging, rough terrains of Australia. However, MT tyres aren’t as efficient on sealed roads. This is because of their high rolling resistance, which leads to increased fuel consumption and road noise.
Features
- Large, open tread pattern
- Durable construction
- Low-speed rating
- High load index
Benefits
- Perform well across an array of challenging terrains, including loose gravel, steep terrains, sand and of course, mud
- Provide high puncture resistance
- Ideal for heavy off-roading duties
At Tony's Tyre and Autocare, we have MT tyres with the necessary off-road capabilities for your 4WD, including sand, mud, and rock. Find below some examples of what we've got in stock:
Toyo Open Country M/T

In mud and soft-terrain off-road situations, the Open Country Mud Terrain (M/T) is made to offer exceptional traction. The aggressive block-type tread pattern extends to the buttress area, providing improved traction in deep ruts and when using low inflation pressures for rock-climbing.
For optimum uniformity, the Open Country M/T is built using Toyo's most recent tyre production technology. Three polyester plies and a strong belt package are used in the casing construction to provide resistance to tread punctures and other types of damage.
Toyo Open Country R/T

The Open Country Rugged Terrain combines the extreme puncture resistance and strength of an M/T with the long-wearing compound and sealed road performance of an A/T to service the emerging ‘hybrid’ tyre category.
The Open Country R/T combines the best features of the Open Country A/T II and the Open Country M/T to provide tough tourers with the all-around performance needed to confidently reach the most remote locations.
