Safety assessment

A pink slip inspection refers to a mandatory safety assessment performed on road registered light vehicles if they are 5 years or older. They are performed by Authorised Inspection Stations who will make sure your vehicle is safe and in good road condition.

According to Service NSW, the light vehicle category includes:

  • Passenger cars
  • Motorcycles
  • Goods carrying vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) of 4.5 tonnes or less with no power-operated brakes
  • Vehicles used to provide point-to-point transport launch
  • Trailers and caravans with an aggregate trailer mass of 4.5 tonnes or less, including those fitted with breakaway brakes

If your passenger vehicle is older than 5 years, you must bring your vehicle to an approved inspection station such as Tony's Tyre and Autocare for a complete inspection.

When do you need a pink slip?

If you live in NSW, it’s important you know that a pink slip inspection is a requirement for every light vehicle older than 5 years. It’s usually done before the vehicle registration. Generally, your registration renewal documentation will tell you if your car is due for inspection.

How much is a pink slip?

The fees for a Pink Slip inspection will vary depending on the type of vehicle you have. Currently, the fees will vary from $22 to $43. However, these numbers are annually reviewed and may increase as part of the annual NSW Treasury approved Consumer Price Index. Visit the NSW Government website for more information about Pink Slip fees.

How long does a pink slip last?

A Pink Slip Inspection typically takes between 30 and 45 minutes. This certificate is valid for 6 months. You must use the report to renew your registration within 6 months for the safety check to be valid. It’s important to assess whether or not your car is safe and roadworthy at a particular time.

Failed safety checks

Before you can renew your registration, you must make the necessary repairs if your vehicle fails a safety inspection.

No additional inspection fees are charged if the repairs are finished within 14 days and you return the vehicle to the same AIS station for a second evaluation. You will be required to pay an additional inspection fee if you repair the vehicle after the 14-day grace period.

You can renew your registration online after the necessary repairs have been made and your car has passed the safety inspection.
